This year the first go-round of the IRHA / NRHA Derby 2018 Non Pro was split into two sections, the first took place on Monday 21st May and the second on the morning of Tuesday 22. At the starting gate, no less than 135 pairs, an increase of 26 on the 2017 entries: 50 competing at level 4, 72 at level 3, 112 at 2 and 98 at level 1.

In great shape, as always, the talented German reiner, Gina Maria Schumacher, who excelled herself by placing all three of the horses she entered among the four best scores: Wham Bam Gunner Man (219.5), Xtra Step N Diamonds (218.5) and Snip O Lution (217). The go-round leader at Level 4, the stallion Wham Bam Gunner Man, was born in 2012 from Gunners Special Nite out of Super Olena Chic and trained by Duane Latimer, while holding the second top-score overall is Xtra Step N Diamonds, a 5-year-old gelding by Wimpys Little Step and Ha Ruby N Diamonds bred at Xtra Quarter Horses.

The only space ‘snatched’ from Gina Maria, was occupied by another German non pro, Bavarian Heike Strambach, who claimed the third best score at level 4, a 217.5 aboard Electric Storm Sg, also placing her top on the score board for levels 3 and 2. Electric Storm Sg, aka Sepp, is a 5-year-old stallion, son of Jacs Electric Spark and Magnetic Lady, bred by Silvia Gandolfi in Italy and purchased in October 2017 at Giuseppe Prevosti‘s facility after completing his first phase of training there. Just a month and a half after his arrival in Germany, Sepp took third place in the IRHA Open Futurity 4-yr-olds level 3 between the reins of Heike's trainer, Arnaud Girinon. Strambach, an entrepreneur in the air-conditioning sector, has been in reining since 2004. After 5 years of relative quiet in the show pen due to work commitments, this excellent horse has enabled her to kick-start her competitive career, starting with a rewarding outing during the 2017 French Futurity Non Pro 3/4-yr-olds of Equità Lyon, where the pair won level 2 and took Reserve Champion honours in level 4.

The second highest score at level 3 (217) bore the name of Austrian non-pro rider Tina Kunstner-Mantl astride Mizzfire (2011 stallion by Gunner out of West Coast Mizzen), while two of her compatriots placed second ex aequo at level 2 with a score of 216.5: Wolfgang Hammer was riding his 5-year-old stallion Mr Ricochet (Ricochet Rooster x Docs Oak Rosy) and Ulrike Krueger was showing Sl Shesgotmesparklin (2012 mare from Jacs Electric Spark and Shes Customized).

Finally, for level 1 Derby Non Pro, the first and second positions of the go-round, with a score of 216 and 215.5 respectively, were garnered by the young Italian, Matteo Manuel Bonzano, 17 years. Matteo marked the higher score aboard Zins Smart Whiz (stallion, 7 years old, son of the first, and only, 12 Million Dollar Sire NRHA Topsail Whiz and Smart Rowdy Lady) and completed the pattern with just half a point less on High Rollin Spook (a 6-year-old gelding from Smart Spook and Shining High Roller). Both horses were bought from Rosanne Sternberg two years ago and passed to the capable hands of the Foncks. Matteo has been working with High Rollin Spook since January, while he had only mounted Zins Smart Whiz once prior to entering the great Cremona challenge; the horse had previously been shown once by Andy Shafer in the US.

The next appointment with the 2018 Non Pro Derby will be the Finals, to be held through Friday afternoon and evening.
