Day 3 of the IRHA/NRHA Derby and the atmosphere at Cremona is already vibrant: no less than 132 pairs passed the starting gate of the large oval arena for the Derby Open go-round, this year divided into two sections that competed over Tuesday evening and a good part of Wednesday. This year the show has attracted many of Europe’s top riders from a total of eight different nations. Overall, there were 52 entries at level 4, 62 at level 3, 85 at level 2 and 68 at level 1.

With a score of 223.5, and an advantage of one and a half points over his closest rival, Belgian Ann Fonck, super trainer, Italian Pierluigi Chioldo is leading the ranking at the 2 highest levels. His companion in this event, is an old and rather special acquaintance, as Pier himself trained this magnificent gelding, son of Saturdaynight Custom and Westcoast Mizzen.  Saturdaynigh Mizzen, bred at the Ambrosini Qh, was shown by Chioldo at the IRHA/NRHA Open Futurity 3-year-olds in 2015 and claimed top honours, winning both levels 4 and 3. Purchased soon after by his current owner, Susanna Sodi, the following year this Non Pro reiner brought the horse back to the IRHA/NRHA Futurity to snatch the title of 4 year-old Non Pro Champion Level 1 and Res Champion Level 2. Chioldo, who was back in the saddle with Saturdaynigh Mizzen for the Open Derby here in Cremona described their reunion: «After three years, we immediately rediscovered the special feeling that had united us before».

Leading the Open level 2 go-round, with a 218, was one of the pillars of Italian reining, Dario Carmignani aboard RS Tigershark Jack, bred by Europe’s first Million Dollar Breeder, Claudio Risso. This 7-year-old gelding started his career with professional Mirko Midili before being shown in the Non Pro competitions by his current owner, Francesca Spaziante. «The horse has been with me for about 9 months», explains Carmignani, «after two weeks, I took him out for the first time to the 2017 Maturity IRHA but we were not yet ready. Since then, he has improved consistently. We prepared for this event by competing in some regional events and I would say his performance in this first go was quite convincing».

Topping level 1 is Roleski Ranch professional, Adrian Motyka with Hollywannashine, a 6-year-old gelding bred at the Polish stables and trained by Adrian himself and shown predominantly by him in Poland. The duo was awarded a score of 216.5 and Motyka described himself as ‘happily surprised,’ adding: «the horse did everything he had to do and performed well throughout. I'm happy with today’s run», concluding with a laugh, «and would be happy to achieve another result like this».

The IRHA/NRHA Derby is scheduled to continue, as in past years, with the Non Pro Finals taking place on Friday afternoon and evening and the grand Open Final on Saturday.
